Bottle Rock Rd Fuel Reduction Project

Drought stressed trees in Lake County are experiencing an unprecedented Die-Off. Deadly Bark Beetles are to blame. The beetles are spreading from tree to tree devastating our forests and increasing the already high wildfire risks throughout the County.

In October of 2022 CLERC started another project under our CALFIRE Fire Prevention Grant. Working closely with the Northshore Fire Protection District’s Fuels Management Crew, we have started a project to reduce hazardous fuel loading along Bottle Rock Rd, while also employing practices that will enhance forest health by supporting biodiversity and stand health. Current conditions along the road are horizontally and vertically contiguous fuels as well as standing dead trees over 16”, mostly occurring on a slope. The project will be conducted in two phases;

Phase I, reduce the occurrence of horizontal and vertical fuel loading by removing ladder fuels, thinning brush and small diameter trees, and eliminating any excess fuel on the ground. Slash created from this process will be burned in small piles prior to Phase II 

Phase II, felling large/complicated snags. Large woody debris will be transported to burn piles on neighboring properties where owners have provided permission to burn.​
