Hazard Tree Removal on Fox Drive and Hoberg Drive
In December of 2021, CalFire performed a flyover of Lake County that revealed widespread conifer mortality across the county. The resulting CalFire report recommends fuel reduction near population centers and the selective removal of hazard trees. Based on community concerns and expert site visits, the area between Fox and Hoberg Drives was identified as an area of particular concern, due to the proliferation of tree mortality combined with proximity to residential neighborhoods.
Using funds from the 2019 Fire Prevention Grant, CLERC launched an effort to fell hazardeous trees on Fox and Hoberg Drives. We know this die off is due to the native Western Pine Beetle. While this process of die off is a natural phenomenon, it has been exacerbated by the climate crisis. California has experienced years of drought and the trees are stressed. Normally, a healthy tree with access to enough water will kick out the unwanted pine beetle larva buried in the bark with sap, but if water is scarce they can not produce enough sap to push out the pine beetle and the tree will swiftly die from an infestation. |
